Artist statement:
I am a multidisciplinary artist who works with textile in all its forms. This element a manufactured material that protects, gives form and defines social, cultural and economic standards, is for me a universal language tied to the individual and collective human condition. With it I address identity, memory, gender, spirit and energy issues.
My work is deeply rooted in the revaluation of sewing as a high art, act thought as a womanly activity and considered “minor”. With this I stress the importance of the feminine as a means to achieve balance and harmony, allowing us to create a free, comprehensive, and equitable world.
The work:
Protection: Is a series of nine pieces; eight coats and one a two-dimensional textile piece. The concept behind this work is the manifestation of the idea of protection by unifying different textiles of diverse origins, times and values to create a harmonic and balanced whole. The need to protect ourselves comes from fear of the unknown. With textiles, history, time, traditions and values are presented in communion in each of the pieces with the idea of de-constructing the barriers that separate us from one another. The two-dimensional piece is a representation of the solar cross, a protective symbol, that dates back to stone age carvings.
